Electrogalvanisation

Electrogalvanisation, or electroplating, with subsequent chromating/passivation, is one of the most common surface treatment methods for iron and steel workpieces when you want to combine high corrosion protection with a good surface finish and longer life. Electrogalvanising is also referred to as zinc plating.

The advantages of electrogalvanisation include:

  • Long-term protection against rust
  • High mechanical load-bearing capability
  • Very good all-round protection, which includes cavities and edges
  • Cathodic corrosion protection
  • Nice-looking surface
  • Very economical
  • Maintenance free
  • Good ecological balance; environmentally friendly process

Electrogalvanisation is primarily used for outdoor constructions in areas such as the construction industry, agriculture, mechanical engineering, automotive, furniture and electronics industries.

This surface treatment is used on most metals such as steel, cast iron, copper and copper-based alloys and, to a lesser extent, aluminium alloys.

At Hosta Industries, we use Denmark’s best surface treatment experts for this process, so that your workpieces are always of high quality.

The choice of chromate/passivate type depends on the desired appearance and durability. Typically, the layer thickness is from 5 to 20 μ. The surface can be treated with enamel, sealer or a friction-reducing agent. The chromate coating contains chromium 6, while passivation is free of chromium 6. Before electrogalvanisation, the metal workpieces go through a pretreatment. This is an acidic and alkaline process. The purpose of the process is to clean the metal workpieces of oil, grease, rust, etc. After the pretreatment, the electrogalvanisation starts. Electrogalvanisation is carried out through a so-called weak acidic zinc process in which, using electricity, a suitable zinc layer, defined by the customer, is added. The zinc layer is typically 12-16 µm. Electrogalvanisation is always followed by a thin layer (0.1 to 0.3 µm) of chromate passivation. The passivation is carried out as yellow or blue chromate and helps improve the corrosion properties. The nickel plating is normally followed by a thin chromium layer (about 0.5 µm) in order to maintain and enhance the gloss of the workpiece, as well as to improve the strength and corrosion protection.
